Family Beach Games

There is so much more to do at the beach than just soak in the sunshine. Use your time on vacation to get to know your family better. And there is no better way to do that than with some family beach games! The beaches of Hatteras Island are the perfect place to play beach games.

Here are some of our favorite family beach games that do not require you to purchase anything. These are all games that can be played by family members of all ages.

Water Bucket Race

This race is an easy one to set up. First, you take a couple of beach pails and line them up. Then, give each participant a shovel. They will need to race to the ocean, scoop up some water and then carefully bring it back to their bucket and dump it in. Then race back for another shovel full! You can set up teams or just individuals. The winner is the person (or team)with the most water in their bucket at the end of four minutes!

Beach Scavenger Hunt

This one may take some prep before you hit the beach. You can create your own list of items to look for or find a printable one on the internet. (Here is an example we love that works for kids of all ages) This is a great activity to set a time limit on or allow it to be played all day you are at the beach. Even harder will be deciding on the prize for the winner.

Sand Hopscotch

This game does not require much, just a stick to make the hopscotch board. Have young kids collect rocks or shells to use as markers. Then you can all bounce your way through this classic game. Don’t remember what a hopscotch board looks like? Click here, or be creative and come up with your own. There are few rules at the beach!

Flick ‘n’ Sticks

Throwing a frisbee at the beach is a classic way to improve your tan while remaining active. How about taking it up a notch and making a game of it. Flick ‘n’ Sticks is a game for older kids and adults, but young children can play as well; just give them an advantage by allowing them to stand closer to the opposing side. Check out this video which shows you how to set up for the game.

Scoring is as follows:

  • 2 points if the disc flies through the poles without knocking off the cups
  • 1 point for each cup that hits the ground
  • No points if the defense catches the disc once it has passed through the poles without touching them
  • No points if the defense catches the cups before they hit the ground

Whatever family beach game you chose to play, the important thing is that you are spending time with family and friends, and you are having fun. Don’t let the competition get in the way of a happy memory!

If you do not live close to the beach, we invite you to stay with us at Outer Beaches Realty. We have nearly 400 vacation rentals on Hatteras Island, and would love to host your family beach vacation.
